LUBBOCK, Texas -- A shooting at the Texas Tech University campus overnight ended with one person dead and two officers hospitalized, according to law enforcement. Officials say the suspect jumped out of the car and started shooting at the officers. Officers returned fire, killing the suspect, police said. The two officers were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
National nonprofit released Wednesday morning that they will be launching community safety patrols for the Texas Tech University school community, following the incident. The release stated that the foundation will also be launching an initiative to aide the officers injured through its, "Back The Blue Emergency Fund."
The officers will also be recognized for heroism by the foundation for their efforts to end the threat to the campus.
"These two officers serve as an example of every day acts of heroism, rare but powerful as threats against our campuses continue nationwide. This situation could have been far worse. Their diligence, possibly prevented far worse. We do not know what this individual was planning specifically on campus, but their intervention ended the threat, plain & simple. We will do all we can to both support them & recognize their efforts to protect students, will not go unnoticed." (James Earle)
Regular patrol rotations for the campus community will occur throughout each week and are expected to continue through the Summer. The STOPNOW volunteer safety patrols for the community are slated to include over a dozen team members, trained in crisis intervention and situational awareness, for ongoing rotation with more being recruited & trained from the community.
Foundation STOPNOW Patrols, originally are modeled after the "Guardian Angels," anti crime unit in NYC in the 1980's, patrol school perimeters & campuses to minimize & prevent safety incidents from reaching school campuses; while also providing extra encouragement and support for students and neighborhoods.
Patrol members are trained to recognize and deescalate potential crisis situations, alert law enforcement of potential threats/incidents and traditionally are part of a nationwide effort to engage community members in reducing youth violence and providing crisis mental health support following traumatic incidents.
Patrols are currently ongoing at several historically troubled schools & neighborhoods or those effected by violence or threat of violence throughout the nation; including Morgan State University, Michigan State University & Choctaw High School; all sites of recent student related shootings and threats. The foundation says it is beginning immediate community recruitment for ongoing patrol programming. The most current patrols have been deployed in Chicago, Illinois following a shooting this week of 7 students:
