
Virginia Teen Receives First Ever National Scholarship Nomination Named After Late Beach Boys Founder, Brian Wilson

National student advocacy and violence prevention 501c3 nonprofit; The Uvalde Foundation For Kids, formed in response to the 2022 Mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas; announced out of Dallas, Texas, Monday evening, that a Virginia teen has been nominated for its new national student scholarship in honor of the late Beach Boys singer, Brian Wilson.
True Schrider, a Blacksburg, Virginia resident & recent honors graduate from Patrick Henry High School has officially been nominated for the, "Brian Wilson Memorial Scholarship," established in honor of the late founder of the Beach Boys & his significant impact worldwide; not only through his music and the surf culture it was born out of; but his philanthropic work for youth as well - as illustrated with his ongoing support over recent years of The Boys & Girls Club along with his national campaigns on behalf of mental health awareness. The student has also been selected to serve as the nonprofits, "Student Ambassador," in Virginia.
The Foundation noted that the teen nominated, recently accepted at Bates college in Maine, with a focus on theatre and Psychology; was selected this week out of 118 other nominations selected to receive the Fall 2025 scholarship, funded through the foundation and a unique national donation platform designed for student nominations.
The final scholarship is awarded to youth/students from nationwide nominations; who not only exhibit excellence in music abilities; but in their illustrated community service - particularly as it relates to prevention of school violence, bullying prevention and the overall advancement of student/youth welfare in their communities.
Mondays release noted that Schrider is the only Virginia teen to be selected. In a statement, foundation founder, Daniel Chapin elaborated on the nomination stating, "You cannot say enough about this young lady, who is the epitome of resiliency, bravery and focus which young people everywhere would do well to follow. We are honored to announce such a nomination as this. Brian (Beach Boys Founder) would be proud."
The national nonprofit has expanded its outreaches since it's inception inat 2022, including adding scholarships and an official recognition program to deserving students/individuals. These have included an Arizona teen, Keely Lotz who recently received recognition for her work to prevent bullying in her school:
